Edward Norton, disturbing monster, or someone we sympathise with. This is the scene that changes our very gripping opinions on Derek as a person. It changes the way we view him. He has realised his wrongs and is showing remorse. In this frame we see Derek covering his eye gripping swastika tattoo with his hand. His facial expressions filled with remorse as we see his lips over turned like a frown and his eyes squinting, which allows us to understand his disgust toward his decisions and hatred for his tattoo. Derek is left looking vulnerable. Through Edward s performance we see him totally stripped down and as an audience we can see that so we connect with him, we can feel the wave of pain and emotion that he is going through. As an audience we see him evolving as a person he’s changing and this is a turning point for him. It was that moment when he really realised killing those people made no difference it achieved nothing, through Edward s performance we can really see that. Derek has gone from being so proud of his tattoo in the first scene to being ashamed of it. We see him boasting about it in the beginning of the film showing it off like he was Hitler, to this frame here where he is ashamed to have that on his body now longing for purity and a new beginning.
